IBM has officially released its Granite Speech 5.0 2B model, designed to support transcription and translation across six different languages. The model, licensed under Apache 2.0, was trained on 390,000 hours of audio data.
Why it matters
The model incorporates synthetic data to enhance automatic speech recognition and keyword biasing capabilities. This release also includes updates to IBM's existing Turbo CTC and Granite Speech 4.1 2B Plus speech models.
The model utilizes a speech encoder of 16 Conformer blocks and a 2-layer window q-former for downsampling acoustic embeddings. Training required 390,000 hours of public audio data processed by 8 H100 GPUs over a 40-day period.
The players
IBM
IBM is a global technology corporation that provides hardware, software, and cloud-based artificial intelligence solutions for enterprise clients.
The details
Granite Speech 5.0 2B uses LoRA adapters to fine-tune an intermediate granite-4.0-1b-base checkpoint. The architecture supports a maximum keyword list size of 2,000 and achieves a 13.79% word error rate on private conversational data sets.
Timeline
October 15, 2026: IBM compiled an internal report on model performance.
October 21, 2026: Leaderboard performance data collection occurred.
October 22, 2026: The Granite Speech 5.0 2B model was released.
The Tech Race
As companies compete to optimize speech-to-text models on the Open ASR Leaderboard, IBM is shifting focus toward smaller, more efficient parameter counts. This release represents a move away from massive, resource-heavy models toward specialized architectures like the 2B parameter version.
Developers and organizations can utilize the open-source Apache 2.0 license to integrate advanced speech transcription and translation into their own applications. The increased efficiency of the 2B model may allow for deployment on hardware with fewer computational requirements.
The takeaway
The Granite Speech 5.0 model demonstrates that high-performance speech recognition can be achieved with smaller parameter sizes through targeted synthetic training data. Users should leverage the open-source licensing to test the model against their specific industry transcription requirements.
