Denzel Washington is set to star in an untitled crime thriller directed by Christopher McQuarrie, which has been greenlit by Amazon MGM Studios and United Artists. The film follows a former police detective with a terminal brain cancer diagnosis who is attempting to reconcile with his family.
Why it matters
The project represents a new creative venture for both Washington and McQuarrie as their individual project calendars opened up. Washington previously saw a project about Hannibal canceled due to costs, while McQuarrie is shifting focus after his long tenure on the Mission: Impossible series.
The production is slated for a theatrical release on October 1, 2027, marking another major project for director Christopher McQuarrie, who has directed 5 films since 2012.

Industry Dynamics
This project underscores the ongoing churn in Hollywood as major talent pivots away from long-term franchise commitments. It signals a shift toward mid-budget or prestige drama projects that fill the gaps left by the cancellation of expensive, higher-risk studio films.
Audiences can expect to see this crime thriller in theaters starting on October 1, 2027. The project will eventually provide viewers with a new dramatic role for Denzel Washington following his recent film cycles.
The takeaway
This collaboration highlights the fluidity of talent schedules in major studio filmmaking. Fans of the lead actor and director should anticipate a shift in tone from their previous high-octane action work to a character-driven crime drama.
