Charlie Hunnam and Jonathan Groff have developed a new meta-thriller television series titled Legends. The show features original cast members from the popular FX drama Sons of Anarchy reuniting at a fan convention while facing a real-world threat.
Why it matters
The creators developed Legends to explore the lasting impact of Sons of Anarchy without relying on gimmicky character resurrections. By portraying actors as versions of themselves, the series offers a unique perspective on the legacy of a prestige drama.
The production follows the structural precedent of the reboot series BH90210, which ran for one season, and contrasts with the 12-season, 24-year run of Curb Your Enthusiasm.
The players
Charlie Hunnam
He is an actor known for his portrayal of Jax Teller in the original television series Sons of Anarchy.
Jonathan Groff
He is an actor and producer who collaborated on the development of this new meta-thriller project.
Katey Sagal
She is an actress who starred in the original series and is part of the cast for the upcoming project.
Kurt Sutter
He is the creator of the original Sons of Anarchy series and is notably not involved in this new production.
The details
Legends portrays actors playing versions of themselves, which allows the series to bring back cast members whose characters died during the original run of Sons of Anarchy. The production is notable for moving forward without the involvement of original show creator Kurt Sutter.
Timeline
Sons of Anarchy aired on FX from 2008 to 2014.
Charlie Hunnam discussed his personal bereavement after playing Jax Teller in 2018.
Industry Dynamics
This project follows the structural precedent set by the meta-series BH90210. Success for this show could ignite a broader trend of meta-thriller spinoffs for other high-profile prestige dramas.
Viewers can expect a unique narrative approach that circumvents traditional reboots by focusing on the actors real-world relationship with the show. Access to the series will depend on final distribution agreements and platform exclusivity.
The takeaway
Legends provides a fresh way for fans to revisit beloved characters without undermining the emotional weight of their original conclusions. The series signals a potential shift in how networks manage franchise legacy and actor involvement in high-stakes spinoffs.
