Do you believe standardized hardware kits help accelerate the development of new mission-ready technologies?

Elma Electronic has launched the VersaPLUS Deployment Kit, a compact system designed to accelerate the integration and qualification of prototype electronics. The kit features a Raspberry Pi CM5-based single board computer and supports the VITA 90 small form factor standard.

Why it matters

This kit enables rapid platform integration and qualification for high-performance systems by providing a pre-configured architecture. It simplifies the transition from prototype to field-ready hardware for defense and industrial applications.

The kit features a 40GBASE-KR4 data plane, a 10GBASE-KR control plane, and a PCIe Gen4 expansion plane. It is fully qualified to meet MIL-STD-810, MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-704, MIL-STD-1257, and D0-160 testing standards.

The players

Elma Electronic

Elma Electronic is a global manufacturer of electronic packaging, cabinets, and embedded computing solutions with U.S. operations in California, Georgia, and Pennsylvania.

The details

The system includes an integrated maintenance port aggregator for out-of-band management through the front panel and a cabling system that converts connectors into commercial I/O interfaces. It is equipped with a VITA 46.11 Tier-3 Chassis Manager to maintain standard compliance.

Timeline

The Tech Race

The introduction of this kit reflects a broader shift toward miniaturized, ruggedized modular computing in the defense and industrial sectors. It follows the pattern of industry hardware vendors building modular solutions to support the VITA 90 small form factor standard.

Engineers and system integrators can use the kit to significantly reduce development cycles for prototype systems. The reliance on standard commercial interfaces ensures that developers can easily integrate peripheral hardware without custom cabling.

The takeaway

By integrating commercial-off-the-shelf components like the Raspberry Pi CM5 with military-grade standards, the kit bridges the gap between rapid prototyping and ruggedized deployment. Developers should leverage these pre-qualified systems to minimize compliance risks during the early stages of project design.
