Developers have released Horizon, a free and open-source rebuild of Minecraft Java Edition 26.3 written in Rust. Horizon is a standalone game program that contains no Minecraft code, assets, or data, so users must supply their own copy of Java Edition 26.3.

Why it matters

Horizon shows that a non-Java implementation can run Minecraft worlds with noticeably lower memory use and faster loading. The project is not approved by or associated with Mojang or Microsoft, so its use depends on users owning the game.

On a Core i7-13700KF with a GeForce RTX 4080, chunk loading after a teleport fell from 32 seconds to 4.7 seconds, and on a 2016 ThinkPad Horizon used 797 MB versus 2 GB for Java Edition. Independent testing on other systems has not yet been reported.

The players

Mojang

Mojang is the Swedish game studio that developed Minecraft and is owned by Microsoft.

Microsoft

Microsoft is the technology company that owns Mojang and the Minecraft franchise.

The details

Horizon runs without the Java runtime, which eliminates garbage-collection pauses, and spreads chunk generation and lighting across worker threads. Its developers report vanilla FPS of 849 versus 672 for Horizon at 32 chunks on desktop, with a maximum distant terrain render distance of 1,024 chunks.

The Tech Race

Horizon follows a pattern of community-built alternative runtimes that reimplement Minecraft Java Edition 26.3 to address the memory and loading costs of the Java virtual machine. Its performance claims are measured against that same Java Edition baseline.

Players who already own Minecraft Java Edition 26.3 could use Horizon to load large worlds faster and on lower-memory machines. Users must still supply their own licensed copy of the game to run it.

The takeaway

Owners of Minecraft Java Edition 26.3 who face slow loads or high memory use may find a non-Java runtime worth testing. Results will vary by hardware, so comparing load times on your own system is the practical next step.
