Matteocean has released MousePods, a tool that enables the gyro sensors in Apple AirPods 3 to work on Linux, where they previously did not function. The project is hosted on GitHub, and most of its code was written with Claude Code.
Why it matters
The AirPods 3 use a different protocol than the AirPods Pro models, which is why earlier Linux support did not reach their motion sensors. Making the sensors usable opens them to input applications beyond audio on the Linux platform.
After a Bluetooth packet size setting that Linux had been using to hide the sensors was corrected, the AirPods 3 gyro sensors stream at approximately 200 Hz. The source does not report how consistently this rate holds across different Bluetooth adapters or Linux versions.
The players
Matteocean
The developer behind MousePods, the open-source tool that enables AirPods 3 gyro sensors on Linux.
Claude Code
An AI coding assistant developed by Anthropic that wrote most of the MousePods code.
The details
The AirPods 3 sensors were hidden on Linux by a Bluetooth packet size setting, which was fixed to allow streaming. During development, agents scanned other projects, and one located relevant information in iOS framework code.

The Tech Race
Reader speculation on Reddit suggests AirPods could serve as a low-cost alternative to TrackIR for head-tracked gaming, a use the sensors were not designed for. Whether the Linux implementation can match the latency and accuracy of dedicated tracking hardware has not been established.
Linux users with AirPods 3 can now access gyro data for input applications instead of being limited to audio playback. Users should confirm their Bluetooth stack supports the packet size fix before expecting the sensors to stream.
The takeaway
Reverse engineering with AI coding agents can surface hidden hardware capabilities that a platform left unsupported. Users interested in similar projects should review the open-source code before installing it on their systems.
