Link Retrieves Silver Scale to Find Princess Ruto
A letter reveals Princess Ruto is trapped inside Lord Jabu-Jabu's belly, and the search leads through an underwater tunnel to Lake Hylia.
Updated on Nov. 6, 2026 in Aquariums
King Zora asks Link for help after his daughter, Princess Ruto, goes missing from the Zora Domain. Link must obtain the Silver Scale through underwater diving training to pass through a tunnel to Lake Hylia, where a bottle containing a letter from Ruto is found.
Why it matters
The story follows the progression of a quest in which a missing person triggers a sequence of exploration and item acquisition. For readers interested in aquarium-themed or underwater gameplay, the diving requirement and underwater navigation are central to the storyline.
Completing the diving training requires collecting five scales underwater to obtain the Silver Scale. The extraction provides no further quantitative detail on the underwater sections.
The players
King Zora
King Zora is the ruler of the Zora people in the fictional Zora Domain and the father of the missing princess.
Princess Ruto
Princess Ruto is the daughter of King Zora whose disappearance drives the storyline of this quest.
The details
After obtaining the Silver Scale, Link swims through the underwater tunnel connecting the Zora Domain to Lake Hylia. Near Lake Hylia, Link finds a bottle with a scroll, presents it to King Zora, and learns that Princess Ruto is inside Lord Jabu-Jabu's belly, a dungeon accessible through an offering at the Zora Fountain.
Timeline
Link must complete the diving training before the tunnel can be crossed.
Culture Shift
Missing-person rescue quests that gate progress behind newly acquired equipment are a recurring structure in the Legend of Zelda series. This storyline follows that pattern by requiring underwater diving skill before a rescue can proceed.
Players or readers planning to follow this storyline should expect to complete the diving training before the underwater tunnel becomes accessible. The extraction does not provide specific timing or difficulty information for the underwater sections.
The takeaway
Progress in this quest depends on mastering underwater movement, since the Silver Scale unlocks the only route to Lake Hylia. Readers interested in aquarium care can apply the same attention to underwater environments to their own tanks.
