Murderbot Book 9 May Be Series Finale
Author Martha Wells says the ninth Murderbot Diaries book could be the last in the series, as Season 2 production begins without a premiere date.
Updated on Nov. 5, 2026 in Television
Martha Wells indicated in an interview with Polygon that Murderbot book 9 may be the final entry in The Murderbot Diaries series. The news comes as Murderbot Season 2 has begun production in April 2026 but has no premiere date set.
Why it matters
The possible ending of the book series shapes how the adapted Apple TV show may continue, since Season 2 reportedly combines the next three books. Wells has one Murderbot book left under contract and has said she has no planned endpoint, leaving the series' future uncertain for international fans.
Season 1 of the Apple TV adaptation holds a 95% Certified Fresh rating from 82 Rotten Tomatoes reviews and an 82% audience score, while the source series has eight published books with one remaining under contract. Season 2 has no premiere date, and Wells has not specified whether book 9 will conclude the series.
The players
Martha Wells
Martha Wells is the author of The Murderbot Diaries, a science fiction series whose titular cyborg protagonist has drawn a wide readership.
Apple TV
Apple TV is the streaming service that carries the Murderbot television adaptation produced from Wells' novels.
Paul Weitz and Chris Weitz
Paul and Chris Weitz are the filmmaking brothers who created the Murderbot television adaptation based on Wells' book series.
The details
Wells made the statement in an interview with Polygon, saying she has no planned structure or endpoint for the series. Murderbot is adapted by Paul and Chris Weitz from Wells' The Murderbot Diaries, and Platform Decay, the eighth book, was released in May 2026.
Timeline
May 16, 2025: Murderbot Season 1 premieres on Apple TV.
July 11, 2025: Season 1 ends after ten episodes.
April 2026: Murderbot Season 2 begins production.
May 2026: Platform Decay, the eighth book, is released.
End of 2026: Wells expects to begin writing the next Murderbot book.
Adaptation Trajectory
Murderbot follows the pattern of streaming adaptations that must catch up to source novels still in progress, a dynamic seen with Apple TV's own book-based dramas. Wells' possible finale would mark a rare case where a streaming series adapts a complete, bounded book arc rather than an open-ended one.
Season 2 of Murderbot has no premiere date yet, so viewers can watch only the first season on Apple TV for now. Readers who want to follow the story before the show returns can continue with the existing eight books in The Murderbot Diaries.
The takeaway
Murderbot's future depends on whether the book series reaches a planned conclusion or continues beyond book 9, which will shape how much of the story the TV adaptation can cover. Fans tracking the show should watch for an announced Season 2 premiere date to confirm when new episodes arrive.
