Federated Hermes has opened an office in Hong Kong's Nexxus Building in Central, with its license subject to approval by the Securities and Futures Commission. The firm, which managed US$884 billion in assets as of September, already has Asia-Pacific offices in Singapore, Tokyo and Sydney.
Why it matters
International financial institutions are establishing Hong Kong offices amid the rise of China's tech stocks and rising demand for investment diversification beyond US dollar-denominated assets. Federated Hermes says the presence will help it serve the largest financial institutions.
Hong Kong assets and wealth managed rose 20 per cent last year to HK$42.2 trillion (US$5.4 trillion), while the Hang Seng Index has lost 9 per cent and the CSI 300 Index 13 per cent so far this year. The timing of any market recovery relative to the new office remains unclear.
The players
Federated Hermes
A Pittsburgh-headquartered asset management firm that manages investments for institutional and individual clients across global markets.
Securities and Futures Commission
Hong Kong's independent statutory body responsible for regulating and supervising the city's securities and futures markets.
Paul Chan Mo-po
Hong Kong's Financial Secretary, who said many financial leaders plan to expand their investments and teams in the city.
The details
Federated Hermes' board approved the Hong Kong office plan one year after first considering it two years ago. The firm says the office is intended to help it serve the biggest financial institutions, and the Hong Kong license is subject to approval by the Securities and Futures Commission.
Timeline
Two years ago: Federated Hermes first considered a Hong Kong office.
One year ago: The firm's board approved the Hong Kong office plan.
Monday: Chinese financial regulators launched measures to stabilise the stock market.
Wednesday: The Hang Seng Index and CSI 300 Index each rose by over 1 per cent.
Market Dynamics
Federated Hermes joins Jane Street and Qube Research & Technologies, which both established Hong Kong offices last year, as global financial firms seek a presence in the city. The expansion follows a 20 per cent rise in Hong Kong assets and wealth managed last year, even as the city's main equity indexes have declined this year.
For Hong Kong-based investors, the expansion of global asset managers into the city may broaden access to professional wealth management services. Investors with exposure to the Hang Seng Index and CSI 300 Index should weigh the indexes' 9 per cent and 13 per cent year-to-date declines against their own allocations.
The takeaway
Global asset managers are increasingly treating Hong Kong as a core hub for serving institutional clients, even as local market indexes have fallen this year. Investors should watch whether the Securities and Futures Commission approves new licenses and how regional stock performance affects demand for these services.
