Alcoa Profit Doubles on Mark-to-Market Gains
The aluminum producer's third-quarter results were lifted by non-operating gains as it funds its planned purchase of AliGroup interests.
Updated on Nov. 4, 2026 in Corporate Finance

Alcoa Corp reported net income of US$483 million for the three months to September 30, 2026, more than double the US$232 million a year earlier. Revenue rose 23.7 per cent to US$3.70 billion, while the profit was driven largely by mark-to-market gains on Ma'aden shares and energy contracts.
Why it matters
The profit increase came from accounting gains rather than an improvement in core operations, as weaker aluminium prices and shipments offset better production costs and higher alumina prices. Alcoa's debt also rose sharply to US$4.82 billion as it prepares to fund its US$4.1 billion purchase of AliGroup interests.
Alcoa's third-quarter net income was US$483 million, or US$1.81 per diluted share, against US$232 million a year earlier. Quarter-end total debt reached US$4.82 billion, up from US$2.45 billion, with cash at US$4.4 billion.
The players
Alcoa Corp
A major aluminum producer with operations spanning mining, refining and smelting across several continents, listed on the New York Stock Exchange and Sydney Stock Exchange.
South32
A diversified Australian mining and metals company that is selling its AliGroup interests to Alcoa.
The details
Alcoa sold US$1.5 billion of 6.625 per cent notes due 2034 and US$1.1 billion of 6.875 per cent notes due 2036 on September 23 to help fund its purchase of AliGroup interests. The company also agreed to sell portions of its Massena East site in New York, with proceeds of up to US$315 million tied to data centre capacity the buyer develops.
Timeline
September 23, 2026: Alcoa sells notes to fund the AliGroup purchase.
September 30, 2026: The third quarter ends with the reported results.
October 15, 2026: South32 shareholders approve the AliGroup sale.
First half of 2027: Alcoa expects to close the AliGroup acquisition.
Market Landscape
The AliGroup acquisition extends a pattern of Alcoa consolidating upstream alumina and smelting assets to control its supply chain. Rising alumina prices and the restart of the Alumar smelter in Brazil reflect how the aluminum sector is repositioning amid uneven demand and cost pressures.
Shareholders are weighing a profit figure lifted by non-cash gains against a balance sheet that now carries more debt. Investors tracking aluminum producers may watch whether the company's core operating results improve as the AliGroup deal progresses.
The takeaway
Headline profit can be inflated by mark-to-market gains, so investors should look at operating results and debt levels together. Alcoa's higher borrowing to fund the AliGroup purchase makes the deal's execution a key factor to monitor.
What happens next
Alcoa expects to close the AliGroup acquisition in the first half of 2027 and to receive US$50 million to US$65 million from the Massena East sale within six months of closing.
