Snapseed 4.2 began a gradual rollout to Android and iOS users, adding a Motion Blur tool, depth-based Lens Blur and multi-wheel Color Grading on Android. The update also lets users import presets and LUTs and share custom Looks.

Why it matters

The update expands Snapseed's editing options for mobile photographers without requiring desktop software. Because the rollout is gradual, not every user will see the new features at the same time.

Snapseed 4.2 supports importing .cube, .xmp, .3dl, .png and .snapseed files for presets and LUTs via the Manage Looks menu in the gallery. The extraction does not state pricing or device compatibility requirements beyond Android and iOS.

The players

Snapseed

Snapseed is a photo editing app that is widely used by mobile photographers for non-destructive edits and filter-based looks.

The details

Snapseed 4.2 adds Discover Community Looks, which features curated community-made edits, and lets users tag their edits with #SnapseedLook to be considered for featuring. The release also adds landscape orientation support on iPhones and iPads.

Culture Shift

The LUT and preset import in Snapseed 4.2 mirrors the workflow long offered by Adobe Lightroom Mobile, extending professional-style color grading to casual mobile users. This places Snapseed's community-driven Looks feature in step with a broader movement toward shared, creator-made editing styles on phones.

Users can import presets and LUTs through Manage Looks in the gallery menu and share custom Looks with included LUTs. Photographers can also tag edits with #SnapseedLook to be considered for the Discover Community Looks feature.

The takeaway

Mobile photographers can now apply imported LUTs and presets directly on their phones, and tagging edits with #SnapseedLook may get them featured in the Discover Community Looks section.
