Fortinet Launches AI Security Service for FortiGate
The cloud-delivered FortiGuard Inline AI Security Service adds AI-specific inspection and guardrails to FortiGate customers.
Updated on Nov. 3, 2026 in Artificial Intelligence

Fortinet announced the FortiGuard Inline AI Security Service, a cloud-delivered offering that delivers AI-specific inspection and guardrails to FortiGate customers. The service extends AI inspection through FortiAIGate, which inspects prompts and data in real time.
Why it matters
As large language models and autonomous agents move into production, they gain access to sensitive data, business applications, and critical workflows. Traditional security tools inspect IPs, signatures, and payloads but do not assess prompts and responses for threats.
Expanded DLP detects 35 types of personally identifiable information and confidential data, and Fortinet offers more than 50 predefined compliance policies. Independent verification of detection accuracy and policy coverage has not been reported.
The players
Fortinet
Fortinet is a cybersecurity company that sells firewall and network security products, including the FortiGate platform, and trades on the Nasdaq under the ticker FTNT.
Michael Xie
Michael Xie is the founder, president, and chief technology officer of Fortinet and has led the company's product development since its founding.
Will Townsend
Will Townsend is chief analyst at LoneStar Advisory & Research, an analyst firm that comments on enterprise security markets.
The details
FortiGate customers can enable the service without deploying separate AI security infrastructure. FortiAIGate inspects prompts, model responses, MCP tool calls, and agent actions against defined policies, discovers shadow AI usage, and applies data loss prevention to AI traffic; it can be self-hosted on-premises or in a customer's cloud on Kubernetes with Nvidia GPUs.
Timeline
November 3, 2026: Fortinet announced the FortiGuard Inline AI Security Service.
The Tech Race
The service extends the FortiGate firewall platform from inspecting network packets and signatures to inspecting AI prompts, model responses, and agent actions. It positions Fortinet against rival security vendors that are adding AI-specific controls to existing network and endpoint products.
FortiGate customers can enable AI inspection without standing up separate AI security infrastructure, which may change how their IT teams monitor employee use of AI tools. Organizations with AI spending limits can receive alerts as usage nears a set threshold, and requests are blocked once spending exceeds it.
The takeaway
Organizations deploying AI tools will need security controls that examine prompts and agent actions, not only network traffic. Reviewing which AI services employees already use is a practical first step before applying data loss prevention policies.
