Would you consider switching to open-ear earbuds that don't block your ear canal?
Vivo has launched the Buds Clip, open-ear earbuds that clip around the outer ear and leave the ear canal open. Each earbud weighs 5.2 grams, and the product comes in Aurora Purple, Moonlight White, and Stardust Black.
Why it matters
The design targets listeners who want to hear their surroundings while wearing earbuds, a niche shaped by fit and comfort concerns. Vivo says it studied more than 2,000 ear shapes during development, with the aim of a comfortable everyday fit.
The earbuds use 12mm dual-magnet drivers and support Hi-Res Audio Wireless along with LDAC, AAC, SBC, and LC3 codecs, plus Bluetooth 5.4 with three-device connection. Vivo's specification sheet does not include a price, and the IP55 rating does not extend to the charging case.
The players
Vivo
Vivo is a Chinese smartphone and consumer electronics company that markets audio products alongside its phones.
The details
The Buds Clip uses a flexible memory titanium alloy bridge and two microphones with a bone-conduction Voice Pickup Unit for calls. The earbuds include a 10-band equaliser and carry IP55 dust and water protection on the earbuds themselves.
Timeline
Buds Clip is listed on the Malaysian Vivo website, with no specific date given.
The Tech Race
The Buds Clip joins a growing set of open-ear audio products that let listeners keep their ear canals clear, competing with established lines such as Shokz bone-conduction headphones. Vivo's approach differs by combining an ear-clip design with high-resolution wireless codecs.
The clip design leaves the ear canal open, which may suit listeners who want to hear traffic or conversation while listening. Buyers should weigh the IP55 rating, which covers the earbuds but not the charging case, against how they plan to use them.
The takeaway
Open-ear earbuds trade sound isolation for awareness of surroundings, so the right choice depends on whether you need to hear your environment. Check water-resistance ratings carefully, since protection may apply only to the earbuds and not the case.
