Technology distributors in the United States and Canada generated $28.9 billion in revenue in Q3 2026, a 29.2 percent increase from $22.3 billion in Q3 2025. Three AI-related categories contributed $4.3 billion, or 66 percent of the overall revenue increase.
Why it matters
Enterprises and specialized cloud operators are investing in computing capacity beyond hyperscale cloud providers, and distributors supply the servers, storage and networking gear that power that buildout. Rising memory prices also contributed to the growth in semiconductor revenue.
Server revenue rose 154.7 percent and storage drives rose 153 percent, while Ethernet switch revenue increased 73.7 percent and semiconductor revenue rose 99 percent. Enterprise Infrastructure revenue reached $3 billion, up 140.1 percent, but the period-over-period figures do not show how much of this reflects pulled-forward demand.
The players
IDC
International Data Corporation is a global market intelligence firm that tracks technology spending and issues forecasts for hardware, software and IT infrastructure markets.
The details
Enterprise Infrastructure, Network Infrastructure, and Components & Semiconductors together drove the increase, while Software revenue reached $5.5 billion, up 12.5 percent. Consumer-facing lines were weaker, with Consumer Electronics down 5 percent and Imaging down 3.2 percent.
Timeline
Q3 2025: baseline quarter for the year-over-year comparison
First nine months of 2026: distribution revenue totals $79.4 billion
Q3 2026: record $28.9 billion in revenue reported
End of 2026: IDC expects pulled-forward PC demand to weaken
2027: IDC expects memory supply constraints and AI infrastructure growth to continue
The Tech Race
IDC's forecast of DRAM and NAND memory supply constraints into 2027 sets the backdrop for this quarter's results, as elevated component prices lift semiconductor revenue. The distributor gains reflect the continued buildout of AI infrastructure that IDC expects to remain a major growth engine through 2027.
Businesses building AI infrastructure face continued elevated memory and component prices through 2027, which can raise the cost of servers and storage they purchase. Consumer buyers may see softer demand-driven pricing on electronics, since consumer electronics and imaging revenue both declined this quarter.
The takeaway
Watch component pricing: IDC's expectation that memory constraints persist into 2027 means infrastructure buyers should plan for elevated hardware costs rather than assume a near-term correction.
