Microsoft has removed the PC-to-PC Migration feature from Windows 11, which had let users transfer files between computers over Wi-Fi or Ethernet during new PC setup. The removal reached all users with the October 13 Patch Tuesday update, KB5127648.

Why it matters

Users who relied on the tool to move files to a new computer now need another method. Microsoft's support page says the feature is no longer available.

PC-to-PC Migration did not transfer installed apps, saved passwords, OneDrive files, BitLocker-encrypted drives, or system folders such as Program Files. Windows Backup covers only the Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Videos, and Music folders and requires a personal Microsoft account, as work and school accounts are not supported.

The players

Microsoft

Microsoft is the American technology company that develops the Windows operating system, OneDrive cloud storage, and the Microsoft account system referenced in the change.

The details

PC-to-PC Migration paired the old and new PCs using the old PC's name and a one-time code, letting users select folders during the new PC's setup. Microsoft directs users to Windows Backup, which syncs folders to OneDrive and restores them through a Microsoft account.

Timeline

  1. June 2025: Microsoft confirmed the Easy Transfer-style rollout in an Insider blog.

  2. July 2025: Microsoft published a support document explaining the feature.

  3. September 10, 2026: The feature was removed from Release Preview builds.

  4. October 13, 2026: Removal reached users with the Patch Tuesday update KB5127648.

The Tech Race

The removal extends a pattern in which Microsoft has moved PC migration from local transfer tools, like the older Windows Easy Transfer, toward cloud-synced backup through OneDrive. That shift leaves users who lack a Microsoft account or who need full app and system transfers with fewer built-in options.

Users planning a new PC must now use Windows Backup or another method, since PC-to-PC Migration no longer transfers files. Anyone moving apps, passwords, or encrypted drives will need to reinstall or re-enter them separately.

The takeaway

Before setting up a new Windows 11 PC, confirm which folders and accounts your backup covers, since installed apps and saved passwords will not carry over automatically.
