Wandering Planet Toys has launched a crowdfunding campaign on Backerkit for a new line of Cryptid Combat soft vinyl art figures. The project features two distinct characters, Cthuluchador and The Ultimoth Warrior.
Why it matters
This collaboration highlights the growing market for artisan-produced vinyl collectibles, merging retro aesthetic sensibilities with modern crowdfunding platforms. Wandering Planet Toys partnered with artist VELIKAN specifically to bring his original sculpts to a broader audience.
The figures stand 5 inches tall and are available in three different colorways. Each set includes options for retro-style lunchboxes featuring the original character artwork.
The players
Wandering Planet Toys
An independent producer specializing in collectible figures and retro-inspired merchandise.
VELIKAN
An artist known for creating original creature sculpts used in high-end vinyl production.
The details
The production process utilizes sofubi techniques, beginning with hand-sculpted original designs in Super Sculpy that are then silicone-molded and scanned for reproduction. The final figures are non-articulated, emphasizing their status as display-focused art pieces.
Timeline
The Backerkit campaign launched on October 28, 2026.
Culture Shift
The adoption of sofubi manufacturing techniques represents a commitment to traditional Japanese soft vinyl production methods that prioritize hand-crafted aesthetics over mass-market molding. This trend reflects a broader cultural movement toward artisan, limited-run collectibles over mass-produced plastic toys.
Collectors interested in these figures can secure them through the active Backerkit campaign at either the single-unit or pair-pricing tiers. Interested buyers should account for the fact that these are non-articulated display pieces produced in limited colorways.
The takeaway
These collectible figures offer a unique intersection of traditional sculpting and modern crowdfunding accessibility for hobbyists. Collectors should note that the campaign offers specific bundle pricing for those looking to acquire both character designs at once.
