ASUS has unveiled the ROG Strix XG27ACMSR, a 27-inch Fast IPS monitor capable of reaching a 640 Hz refresh rate at HD resolution. This new display utilizes a flexible design that lets gamers prioritize either high-fidelity image detail or ultra-fast refresh rates.
Why it matters
The monitor introduces a unique versatility for competitive players who may want high-resolution visuals for casual gaming or maximum frame rates for fast-paced eSports competition. By offering three distinct modes, the device aims to bridge the gap between image clarity and raw performance.
The monitor features a 27-inch Fast IPS panel with a 0.3 ms response time and 400 cd/m² brightness. It supports connectivity through DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.1, and USB-C with 15 W power delivery, while maintaining a 1,100:1 contrast ratio.

The Tech Race
This launch marks a significant escalation in the monitor arms race, where manufacturers are increasingly prioritizing ultra-high refresh rates to appeal to the competitive gaming market. It challenges the industry standard of fixed-resolution panels by offering users the flexibility to sacrifice pixel density for extreme frame rate capabilities.
Gamers gain the ability to adjust their display settings dynamically to match the demands of different game titles, from visual-heavy adventure games to high-speed competitive shooters. The inclusion of USB-C power delivery also simplifies desktop setups by allowing users to power peripherals or devices directly through the monitor.
The takeaway
This new monitor provides a practical solution for players who frequently switch between different genres of games that require varied performance priorities. It highlights the growing trend of hardware manufacturers creating multi-mode devices to maximize the utility of high-end gaming peripherals.
