Konami has made the original Castlevania game available for free on the App Store and Google Play. This promotion serves as a celebration of the franchise's 40th anniversary.
Why it matters
The release allows new players to experience the foundational title of the long-running series on modern devices. Fans who download the game during this period will maintain access to the title after the offer concludes.
The original Castlevania is currently free on major mobile storefronts to mark its 40th anniversary. The game does not feature controller support, requiring users to navigate solely through onscreen mobile controls.

Konami
Konami is a Japanese entertainment and video game company that owns and publishes the Castlevania series.

Players can secure the game via the App Store or Google Play storefronts until the promotion concludes. Once downloaded during the promotional window, the software remains fully playable for users indefinitely.
Timeline
The Castlevania series originally debuted on Famicom in Japan in 1986.
North American audiences received the original NES release in 1987.
The promotional period for the free mobile game began on September 24, 2026.
The free download promotion ends on October 23, 2026, at 7:59 AM PST.
Culture Shift
This release follows the industry pattern of leveraging milestone anniversaries to reintroduce classic titles to a modern mobile audience. It reflects a broader shift where historical gaming catalogs are increasingly digitized and offered via mobile storefronts to reach new players.
Players can download the title now at no cost to keep in their mobile library permanently. Since the mobile version lacks controller support, users should be prepared to use the native onscreen interface to play.
The takeaway
Users looking to preserve the title for future play should complete their download before the October deadline. By keeping the game installed, players can continue to experience the classic title long after the promotional window closes.
