The DEEP DIALOGUE project has launched to investigate and test interventions against polarization, extremism, and disinformation. The initiative involves partners from nine countries, including Ukraine and Canada, to strengthen social cohesion.

Why it matters

Polarization, hate speech, and disinformation pose significant threats to democratic stability, public trust, and social cohesion. This research aims to provide evidence-based dialogue tools to mitigate these risks.

The project encompasses a survey of 13,200 respondents and over 300 qualitative focus groups. Researchers are also testing four specific dialogue formats with 600 youth participants.

The players

CEPS

CEPS is a leading European think tank that coordinates multiple work packages within the DEEP DIALOGUE project.

The details

Researchers utilize an AI-enabled Early Warning Dashboard and a Polarisation & Disinformation Barometer to monitor trends. These efforts integrate with a Radicalisation-Polarisation Feedback model to develop training, MOOCs, and policy briefs.

Timeline

Culture Shift

This project reflects a broader societal shift toward using data-driven interventions to counter the digital acceleration of polarization. It positions collaborative research as a primary defense against the erosion of trust in global democratic institutions.

The project will provide open datasets and training materials, potentially offering new resources for community leaders and educators to address polarization. These tools are designed to translate complex research into practical, dialogue-based interventions for local youth groups.

The takeaway

The initiative highlights the importance of leveraging AI and randomized controlled trials to address social instability. Individuals interested in civic health can monitor the project's upcoming release of open datasets and training materials.
