Researchers Map Lepista Sordida Fungal Genomes
Scientists have successfully produced complete genome assemblies for two distinct strains of the mushroom species Lepista sordida.
Updated on Oct. 16, 2026 in Life Sciences

Researchers have generated high-quality, telomere-to-telomere genome assemblies for two strains of the fungus Lepista sordida, known as Hua8 and L-2. These detailed maps provide a comprehensive look at the genetic makeup of these organisms.
Why it matters
These assemblies offer a vital foundation for studying dikaryotic genome biology and the regulation of traits in fungi. The data allows researchers to more effectively dissect genetic diversity within the species.
The study utilized Illumina NovaSeq 6000 and PacBio HiFi sequencing to achieve 99 percent BUSCO fungi completeness across 24 scaffolds per assembly. Hua8 features 24,444 protein-coding genes, while L-2 contains 25,335.
The players
Hua8
This is one of the two Lepista sordida strains that researchers used to produce complete genome assemblies.
L-2
This is the second Lepista sordida strain included in the study for genomic mapping and annotation.
The details
The team successfully achieved telomere-to-telomere continuity for 21 pseudo-chromosomes in both strains. The assemblies reached high accuracy, with Merqury QV scores exceeding 60 for Illumina data and 70 for HiFi data.
Timeline

The Big Picture
This research contributes to the overarching objectives of the Earth BioGenome Project to catalog the genetic diversity of eukaryotic life. By establishing high-quality reference genomes, the study shifts the paradigm for future investigations into fungal trait regulation and evolutionary biology.
While this study focuses on fundamental biology, these genome assemblies could eventually support advancements in agricultural productivity and biotechnology. By better understanding fungal genetics, scientists may unlock new ways to optimize mushroom cultivation and improve crop health.
The takeaway
Detailed genetic mapping remains a critical tool for understanding how complex organisms function and evolve. Researchers can now utilize these high-resolution assemblies to explore the unique biological mechanisms that define the Lepista sordida species.
