Logistics provider Rhenus has officially deployed a fleet of 51 Mercedes-Benz eSprinter vans to support its last-mile delivery operations. These vehicles, which are used for transporting furniture and large appliances, are part of the company's broader transition toward battery-electric transportation.

Why it matters

Battery-electric vans are increasingly ideal for commercial logistics because they operate on predictable, repetitive routes that return to fixed charging hubs. This deployment underscores a strategic shift for logistics firms aiming to lower the carbon footprint of their home delivery networks.

The eSprinter vans feature 81-kWh batteries and 100 kW electric motors capable of 11 kW AC charging and 115 kW DC fast charging. These units were manufactured at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Ludwigsfelde and equipped with box bodies from Junge Fahrzeugbau.

The players

Rhenus

This is a global logistics services provider that specializes in contract logistics, freight logistics, and port logistics.

Mercedes-Benz

This is a German automotive manufacturer known for producing luxury vehicles, commercial vans, and heavy-duty trucks.

Junge Fahrzeugbau

This is an industrial vehicle body manufacturer that provides customized box bodies for commercial transport fleets.

The details

The vehicles utilize rear-wheel drive and standard MBUX multimedia systems, including integrated safety assistance features designed for commercial utility. Rhenus is currently utilizing the fleet for the home delivery of consumer electronics, household appliances, and furniture.

Timeline

  1. A Mercedes-Benz GenH2 truck began regular logistics operations in Duisburg in early 2026.

  2. Rhenus added nine electric vans to its Polish fleet in August 2026.

  3. The announcement of the 51 Mercedes-Benz eSprinter deployment occurred in October 2026.

Roadmap

This deployment reflects the accelerating industry-wide transition toward battery-electric vans for commercial urban logistics. It positions Rhenus as a key participant in the shift away from internal combustion engines, following a pattern set by the adoption of the Mercedes-Benz eSprinter.

For consumers, this move suggests that home deliveries for large items like appliances and furniture will increasingly be completed by electric rather than diesel-powered vehicles. As companies scale these fleets, it may also lead to improved service efficiency and reduced delivery-related noise in urban neighborhoods.

The takeaway

Commercial logistics providers are increasingly favoring electric vans because their daily routes are predictable and return to fixed charging stations. Operators should anticipate further advancements in the sector, including the shift toward 800-volt technology for faster charging intervals.
