Researchers have developed half-terry socks using a blend of post-consumer denim waste and recycled polyester. The study successfully produced twelve yarn variants with varying cotton-to-polyester ratios to test structural and comfort metrics.

Why it matters

Post-consumer denim waste represents a massive cotton-rich waste stream that is often overlooked in textile manufacturing. Repurposing this material could reduce reliance on virgin fibers while lowering production expenses.

The recycled socks cost between 0.149 and 0.152 € per pair, notably lower than the 0.160 € cost for virgin control socks. Researchers created 12 yarn variants using three different polyester-to-cotton ratios.

The details

The study utilized ring and rotor spinning at two twist levels to create yarns from 90/10, 80/20, and 70/30 recycled polyester and cotton ratios. While the recycled socks offered better air permeability, they showed lower pilling resistance at grade 1, compared to grade 3 for virgin socks, and increased abrasion loss as cotton content rose.

Culture Shift

This development aligns with the circular economy initiative in sustainable textile manufacturing by repurposing discarded denim into new, functional products. It highlights a growing shift toward minimizing waste by integrating post-consumer materials into everyday apparel production.

For consumers, this research suggests that future mass-produced clothing could become more affordable as manufacturers adopt recycled materials. However, buyers should expect potential trade-offs in fabric durability and pilling resistance compared to traditional virgin-fiber products.

The takeaway

While recycled denim socks offer a cost-effective and breathable alternative to virgin materials, their lower pilling resistance suggests they may require different care routines. Consumers interested in sustainable fashion should look for labels detailing recycled content to weigh comfort benefits against long-term wear.
