Platts has proposed launching daily CO2 abatement assessments for bio-LNG in Rotterdam, with an effective start date of January 4, 2027. These new assessments will quantify emissions abatement costs for both subsidized and unsubsidized bio-LNG.
Why it matters
The assessments will allow market participants to compare bio-LNG costs against conventional marine fuels like very-low sulfur fuel oil and marine gasoil. By providing standardized data, the move aims to bring greater transparency to the shifting economics of cleaner maritime bunker fuels.
Assessments will reflect both 50% and 100% of EU ETS costs using a carbon intensity of -30g CO2/MJ for bio-LNG. Data will be finalized daily at the 1630 London time market close.
The players
Platts
Platts is a global provider of energy and commodities information and benchmark price assessments.
The details
The assessments incorporate emissions factors from Regulation (EU) 2023/1805 to calculate the cost of abatement. By multiplying Tank-to-Wake emissions factors by daily European Union Emissions Trading System price assessments, the system provides a comparative cost analysis for shippers.
Timeline
January 4, 2027, marks the proposed launch date for the new bio-LNG assessments.
Roadmap
This proposal highlights the ongoing industry transition toward lower-carbon maritime fuels to comply with evolving European environmental regulations. It positions standardized data as a critical tool for ship operators navigating the shift from fossil-based bunker fuels to alternatives.
Fleet operators will gain a new metric to calculate the financial impact of environmental compliance when choosing between bio-LNG and traditional marine fuels. This transparency may influence future procurement budgets and fuel selection strategies for international shipping companies.
The takeaway
Standardized cost assessments are becoming a requirement for industries looking to manage the complexities of carbon pricing and environmental mandates. Companies operating in the maritime sector should begin aligning their reporting tools with these upcoming regulatory benchmarking standards.
What happens next
