Introduction
The world Jewish population is estimated to be around 14.2 million, with the largest proportion residing in Israel. However, there are significant differences from country to country in terms of the number of Jews living there. For example, the United States has the second largest Jewish population after Israel with an estimated 6 million Jews, while France has the third largest with 446,000. The smallest Jewish communities in the world have an estimated 100 people per country. In some areas such as Germany and Poland where Jewish populations used to be large prior to World War II, the numbers have since drastically declined due to emigration and other factors associated with the war’s destruction and persecution of Jews. In addition, many countries such as Russia and Ukraine have reported a resurgence in their Jewish population due to increased religious freedom following the fall of Soviet rule. Other countries like Argentina also have vibrant Jewish communities that attract immigrants from all over Latin America wishing to settle in these areas.
