Introduction
The Human Development Index (HDI) is a metric that attempts to measure and compare levels of human development between countries. It was created by the United Nations in 1990 as part of their development mission and has since become an important indicator for international organizations, governments, and non-governmental organizations in determining global welfare and economic growth. The index works by combining three key elements – life expectancy at birth, education level, and income per capita – into one single number. This number provides an easy way to compare different countries’ progress towards providing better living conditions for their citizens. HDI takes into account more than just basic financial performance; it looks at other factors like healthcare, political stability, gender equality, and access to resources as well. This makes it a more comprehensive approach to measuring a nation’s human development compared to traditional economic methods like GDP growth alone. As a result of its popularity and accuracy, the HDI has become a widely used tool for assessing relative progress towards achieving sustainable human development across the globe.

HDI Ranking
The Human Development Index is a ranking system used by the United Nations to assess the well-being of countries and measure their progress in multiple dimensions. The rankings are based on various measurements such as Gross Domestic Product (GDP), life expectancy at birth, education levels, poverty rates, and Gender Inequality Index (GII). Countries are ranked on a scale from 0 to 1 with 1 being the highest level of development. In 2021, Switzerland, Norway, and Iceland all topped the HDI with a score of 0.96. At the opposite end of the spectrum, Chad and South Sudan have a score of 0.39, both ranking for the lowest level of human development in the world according to the UN’s report for 2021. Generally speaking, countries with higher HDI rankings tend to have better health care systems, higher educational attainment levels, lower poverty rates, greater gender equality and higher standards of living overall than those towards the bottom end of the list. This data can be used by governments around the world as an indication of where focus needs to be placed when it comes to providing quality living standards for their citizens as well as measuring their progress over time.
