Pet Raccoon Legal States

Pet ownership is common throughout the United States. Pets vary, however, from dogs to cats, lizards, fish, hamsters, and many other animal species. Most of these animals are domesticated and easy to care for without their owners having to worry that they’ll harm them or damage their property. When it comes to unique situations where people take a wild animal into their home to have it live alongside them as their pet, things become slightly more complicated.

Raccoons are a species of mammal that is native to the North American continent. Raccoons are nocturnal scavengers that live independently from human beings. However, when they live along the fringes of civilization, they will often eat food from dumpsters and ransack accessible trash cans while searching for food. It is perhaps thanks to their soft, docile appearance that people attempt to keep them as pets in rare instances.

Can You Have a Raccoon as a Pet?

Opinions vary, and in many states, raccoons are illegal to own because they fall under the category of exotic animals or furbearers, and are often protected. States also prohibit the adoption or possession of raccoons because they carry various diseases, including rabies, and may create a health hazard. Due to the animal’s proximity to the population and its capacity to adapt easily and quickly to urban areas, in certain jurisdictions like Arizona, raccoons are considered to be a public nuisance and a destructive force to home and landowners. Still, a majority of the country allows for coon hunting, sometimes without many restrictions, like in Idaho.

However, there are some states where one can have a pet raccoon. For instance in Michigan, you can keep a raccoon as a pet as long as it meets two qualifications: the ownership of the raccoon has to be approved by a veterinarian, and the owner has to have a wild animal permit. The state of Florida also authorizes its citizens to keep a raccoon as a pet under the condition that one gets a permit from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Do Raccoons Make Good Pets?

While these intelligent creatures with their bandit mask, ringed tail, and tiny hands appear to be adorable, most animal experts do not recommend keeping them as pets. They can adapt very quickly to various environments, they can solve problems, and they have a good memory. However, they are also wild animals: unpredictable and mischievous, they may become aggressive toward humans and bite them. This should be kept in mind as raccoons often carry diseases and parasites, including rabies. Moreover, they are high-maintenance: in constant need of attention and supervision, they can be messy and disruptive, and finding veterinary care might become a complex and expensive task. In the end, raccoons do not make good pets and should remain in their natural environment.
