Introduction
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a disease spread by bodily fluids which weakens a person’s immune system; if left untreated, HIV can lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). HIV is uniquely dangerous because the human body cannot entirely fight off the virus and there is no effective cure, so, once contracted, one has HIV for life. Yet, progress in knowing how the disease functions, in diagnosis, prevention, and treatment have considerably changed the prevalence and incidence of HIV.
According to the World Health Organization, 650,000 people died of HIV-related causes and about 38.4 million people were living with HIV in 2021 around the world. In 2019, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that there were 1.2 million adults and adolescents with HIV in the United States in 2020, including 13% of people with HIV that were undiagnosed, therefore unaware of their seropositivity. Looking more closely into each state, HIV infection rates differ notably. These differences are due to a wide variety of factors, including healthcare legislation and social stigmas.
See for yourself how HIV statistics differ by state by looking at the data in the charts.
