Introduction
Gross domestic product (“GDP”) is demonstrative of the economy of a particular region. The GDP of a state refers to the production and distribution of goods in the state and is listed in dollars. There are two ways in which GDP can be viewed, either as the amount of profits kept over the course of a year or the total expenditures within the state. These numbers should be extremely close, if not identical, when being calculated. Since the COVID-19 pandemic and the consequent response, states have seen a significant decrease in GDP.
The United States Bureau of Economic Analysis released its Q1 report for 2022, finding GDP decreased in forty-six states and the District of Columbia. At the national level, GDP decreased at an annual rate of –1.6% in the same timeframe.
