Introduction
The safety of a country can be measured by various factors such as crime rates, terrorist activities, internal conflicts, political instability, natural disasters, and more. One of the widely used measures to assess the safety of a country is the Global Peace Index (GPI), which ranks countries from the most peaceful to the most dangerous countries in the world. According to the GPI 2021 report, Iceland was ranked the safest country in the world for the 13th consecutive year, followed by New Zealand, Ireland, Austria, and Denmark.
The GPI takes into account 23 indicators that are grouped under three domains: ongoing conflict, safety and security, and militarization. The ongoing conflict domain includes indicators such as the number of deaths from organized internal conflict, number of internal refugees, and external conflicts fought. The safety and security domain includes indicators such as the level of violent crime, homicide rate, political instability, and terrorist activity. The militarization domain includes indicators such as military expenditures, arms exports, and military personnel.
The trends in the world in terms of safe countries show that Europe is the safest region, followed by the Asia-Pacific region, and then North America. However, it is important to note that safety is not guaranteed in any part of the world, and the safety level of a country can fluctuate over time.

Source
The data we use on our page comes from different sources. The Global Peace Index and the Societal Safety and Security Score both come from visionofhumanity.org while the Global Crime Index comes from ocindex.net. Finally, the murder rate comes from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
These sources gather data from a range of different sources, including government statistics, academic research, and survey data. The data is then aggregated and analyzed to create the various indexes and rankings that we use to measure safety and security around the world. While these indexes and rankings can provide a useful snapshot of safety and security in different countries, it is important to keep in mind that they are based on a range of different factors, and may not reflect the full complexity of a country’s safety situation.
