Introduction
In the past several years, the world has seen a dramatic shift towards renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydroelectricity. Countries around the globe have pledged to increase their reliance on renewable energy sources in an effort to reduce their carbon footprint and combat climate change. This shift is clearly visible in the data: according to the International Energy Agency (IEA), renewables accounted for nearly 25% of global electricity production in 2019 compared to just 9.4% in 2010. However, countries vary widely when it comes to how much of their electricity comes from renewable sources. For example, some countries such as Sweden and Norway produce nearly all of their electricity from renewables while other countries such as India and China still rely heavily on non-renewable sources like coal and natural gas. As technology advances, many experts think that more countries will be able to ramp up their production of renewable energy even further. By investing heavily in research and development, many nations are also creating ways to store renewable energy so that it can be used when there is no direct sunlight or wind available. With governments around the world continuing to make big investments in renewable energy infrastructure, its use is sure to increase even more in years ahead.
