Introduction

Rape is a serious crime that affects millions of people around the globe. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 1 in 3 women will experience sexual violence in their lifetime, with 7% of those women having experienced rape or attempted rape. These statistics are deeply concerning considering that the United Nations (UN) estimates that more than 72 countries still do not have laws specifically addressing the issue of rape.

This lack of legal protection combined with a significant lack of access to resources and support for survivors has resulted in an alarming number of unreported incidents; for example, a study by UN Women found that as few as 10% of rapes are actually reported to authorities worldwide, which shows in the data on rape statistics, with countries with the highest rape statistics being the countries that have the best systems in place for victims of rape or sexual assault to come forth, and countries with the lowest or nonexistent rape rates being countries where rape is a cultural taboo and no system is in place to witness and/or charge assault. In addition, underreporting is particularly common among marginalized communities such as LGBTQ individuals, people with disabilities, certain religious minorities, and rural populations. As a result, these communities often face additional barriers when it comes not only to reporting cases but also to receiving proper medical care or mental health services after experiencing sexual violence.

Rape Statistics Worldwide

Rape statistics across continents vary significantly, due to differences in socio-cultural norms, perceptions of gender roles and legal frameworks. In Europe, for example, the rate of reported rape is relatively low compared to other parts of the world; however, many cases go unreported. Sub-Saharan Africa has some of the highest rates of rape in the world due to a number of factors including conflict and poverty, although the data doesn’t show it, because many of these incidents go unreported. The prevalence of gender-based violence is particularly high in conflict-affected countries such as South Sudan or Democratic Republic of Congo. For example, in South Kivu province in DRC, over one million women and girls have experienced sexual violence since 1998 alone.

In the Asia Pacific region rates vary from country to country but overall remain high due to a lack of education about sexual and reproductive health rights, economic disparities as well as weak legal protections for victims. This is compounded by harmful traditional practices such as honor killings which are still practiced in some countries such as Pakistan or India. And yet, the official rape statistics are very low, since most of these incidents are never reported. In Latin America rape is most prevalent among Indigenous women who often face discrimination and exclusion from access to justice and healthcare services related to sexual assault. Rates also tend to be higher than average in countries where organized crime groups are active. Finally, trends show that North America has seen an increase in reports of rape over recent years due to increased awareness around gender issues and improved access to services for survivors.

In general, the higher the rape statistics of a country, the higher the probability that the system in place to record rape incidents is efficient, the lower the rape rate, the higher the chance that rape incidents are not being reported.

Highest Rape Statistics in the World

The ten countries with the highest recorded rape statistics in the world are Botswana, Lesotho, Grenada, Sweden, Eswatini, South Africa, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Panama, Iceland and Suriname. Botswana is reported to have the highest rate of rapes per 100,000 people, with 96.87 cases being reported. This is followed closely by Lesotho with 89.29 incidents of rape, and Grenada with 88.87 cases of rape recorded per 100,000 people respectively. Sweden sits in fourth place at 87.97 cases of rape reported, and Eswatini rounds up the top five countries with the most rapes, with 82.73 rapes reported per 100,000 people. South Africa is the sixth country with highest rape rate, with 70.22 instances of rape being recorded every year, while St Kitts & Nevis records 56.4 rapes per 100K people annually, putting it in in seventh position. As number eight on this list lies Panama with 53.98 rapes per 100K inhabitants, while Iceland ranks ninth, with its 46.3 cases of rape reported annually. Finally, the tenth country with the highest rape statistics is Suriname, at a rate of 43.3 rapes per 100,000 people.

2. Lesotho – 89.29
3. Grenada – 88.87

5. Eswatini – 82.73
6. South Africa – 70.22
7. Saint Kitts and Nevis – 56.4
8. Panama – 53.98

10. Suriname – 43.3

Country with Highest Rape Rate

Botswana is the country with the highest rape rate in the world, with 96.87 cases of rape being reported per 100,000 people. The rate of sexual assaults in Botswana is so high that it is more than double the global average of 35 cases reported per 100,000 people. This alarming figure has been attributed to a plethora of factors such as the prevalence of alcohol abuse, gender-based violence, and a lack of adequate sexual education within the country. The government has taken strides to address this issue by implementing laws against gender-based violence, reforming outdated attitudes towards sexual assault and introducing comprehensive sex education in schools. However, reports suggest that there remains much work to be done in order to reduce the still alarmingly high rates of rape in Botswana and bring it closer to international standards.

Lowest Rape Statistics in the World

The ten countries with the lowest rates of reported rape per 100,000 people are Oman, Bermuda, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Azerbaijan, Syria, Mozambique, Palestine, Tajikistan and Nigeria. Countries like Oman and Bermuda have no reported rapes per 100,000 people in their population. Other countries such as Saudi Arabia and Egypt have similarly low statistics at 0.09 and 0.12 respective reported cases of rape per 100,000 inhabitants. Azerbaijan has a slightly higher rate at 0.15 reported rapes per 100,000 people while Syria reports slightly more at 0.17 rapes per 100K. Both Mozambique and Palestine had 0.19 and 0.25 rapes per 100K respectively, whereas Tajikistan at a rate of 0.36, and Nigeria, at 0.47, round out the list of the top ten countries with the lowest rape statistics in the world today. It is important to keep in mind that these statistics are made based on the number of reported cases of rape incidents, meaning that the fact that these countries have such low rates does not mean that rape incidents rarely happen in those countries, but rather that such incidents are not being reported.

Countries with Lowest Rape Rate

1. Oman – 0
2. Bermuda – 0
3. Saudi Arabia – 0.09
4. Egypt – 0.12
5. Azerbaijan – 0.15

8. Palestine – 0.25
9. Tajikistan – 0.36
10. Nigeria – 0.47

Country with Lowest Rape Rate

The two countries with the lowest rape rates are Oman and Bermuda. While the absence of reported rape incidents in Bermuda and Oman could at first glance seem as an impressive feat, the reasons behind it may actually be concerning. Rape is an incredibly underreported crime, meaning that many victims do not come forward to report due to fear of stigma or retribution. In these two countries, cultural norms strongly discourage survivors from speaking out about their experiences. Furthermore, there are often limited resources for victims- such as access to mental health care and legal support. Additionally, gender inequality can play a role in victims’ reluctance to come forward; women’s rights may be seen as less valuable or important than men’s rights which could prevent victims from seeking help and justice. Finally, traditional views on marriage and sex can make it difficult for some rape survivors to report due to feelings of shame or being viewed negatively by their communities.

The rape statistics in Australia are at 2.26 per 100,000 people, ranking the country one hundredth in terms of the highest rape statistics in the world. Despite this lower rank, more than 31,000 sexual assaults were reported in Australia in 2021, increasing by 13%, with many more going unreported due to victims not feeling comfortable coming forward. In addition, recent studies suggest that one in five Australian women have experienced sexual assault since the age of fifteen – a figure that emphasizes the severity of the issue.

Botswana has the highest rape statistics in the world at 96.87 per 100,000 people, and this number has been rising in recent years. The reported number of rapes is also lower than the actual number due to the social stigma and fear that victims have of reporting a crime to authorities. The government and civil society organizations have made great strides in recent years to try and tackle this issue through education initiatives, tougher laws, and better access to support services for survivors.

The rape statistics in Brazil are at 22.44 per 100,000 people, ranking the country thirtieth in terms of the highest rape statistics in the world. Due to social stigmas, it is likely that many more cases go unreported, making it difficult for policies and public initiatives to be implemented for prevention or punishment. Furthermore, the government has made legislative efforts to address the issue of sexual violence and increase penalties for perpetrators.

The rape statistics in Egypt are at 0.12 per 100,000 people, ranking the country one hundred and forty-first in terms of the highest rape statistics in the world. Despite having relatively lower rape statistics compared to other countries, rape is still a cause for concern. In fact, sexual harassment remains one of the most widely reported crimes in the country, with women and children often falling victim to these traumatic experiences. Women's rights organizations have been actively fighting against such social injustices in Egypt, aiming to achieve tangible progress in terms of legal reforms as well as institutional support for those affected.

The rape statistics in Germany are at 12.08 per 100,000 people, ranking the country fifty-first in terms of the highest rape statistics in the world. However, studies conducted on unreported sexual assault indicate that the issue is unreported due to victims feeling ashamed, afraid to report the crime, and the victim feeling threatened not to. As a result, it is likely that the actual figures for rape are much higher than what is officially recorded. In addition, this statistic does not include other forms of sexual assault such as groping, verbal abuse, and coercion which also disproportionately affect women in Germany.

The reported rape statistics in India are at 2.63 per 100,000 people, ranking the country ninety-fourth in terms of the highest rape statistics in the world. However, reports suggest that far more incidents go unreported due to patriarchal attitudes and victim blaming. It is estimated that every day above 80 women are raped, and there have been over 31,000 reported cases in 2021 alone. The root causes of this epidemic include a lack of public awareness about gender-based violence, cultural beliefs that discourage victims from reporting rape, and inadequate legal protection for survivors.

The Japanese government has implemented a number of initiatives to combat this issue, such as tougher punishments for perpetrators and increased public awareness campaigns in order to reduce the number of rapes occurring each year. Furthermore, laws have been revised to protect victims more effectively and make prosecution easier by expanding legal definitions of rape.

Lesotho has the second-highest rape statistics in the world at 89.29 per 100,000 people, and research shows that rape and gender-based violence are endemic in Lesotho. This figure is also likely to be much higher due to underreporting and fear of retribution for victims speaking out. The majority of survivors are young women and girls, with a large portion of reported rapes involving those aged 16 or younger. Despite recent improvements in laws aiming to protect victims, cultural beliefs continue to contribute to an environment where violence against women is largely tolerated and rarely punished appropriately.

However, this number likely represents a mere fraction of the actual cases that go unreported, as one study has shown that Pakistan’s media underreports on 91% of cases of violence against women. Therefore, the number of sexual violence cases will be wholly unreported as the stigma surrounding rape persists, along with the feeling of shame, and the media’s underreporting of the issue also allows this stigma to continue.

The Philippine government has made efforts to address this issue by introducing legislation such as the Anti-Rape Law of 1997. However, despite these advancements, there are still a daily average of 18 rapes per day, many of which make it through the court proceedings and even fewer cases result in convictions. Furthermore, there are countless unreported cases due to victims’ fear of being shamed or blamed for their assault which further contributes to higher rape statistics in the country.

However, studies suggest that a small of rape victims will report incidents to law enforcement officials in Russia, this is similar to other nation too. This is due to a lack of trust in authorities and a fear of being blamed or shamed for coming forward. There is also a belief within Russian culture that pursuing justice through legal channels is not worth the effort because most perpetrators will not be held accountable for their actions. This leaves many victims feeling powerless and unsupported as they struggle to cope with this traumatic experience.

South Africa has the sixth-highest rape statistics in the world at 70.22 per 100,000 people. While rape has become a serious and pervasive issue in South Africa, many experts suggest that this number is even higher since many rape cases go unreported due to fear of retribution or embarrassment. The government has been attempting to tackle this problem by implementing anti-rape campaigns and introducing harsher penalties for those who are found guilty of sexual assault.

Sweden has the fourth-highest rape statistics in the world at 70.22 per 100,000 people. Sweden's rape rate is high due to a number of factors, including its expansive definition of rape and historical ambivalence towards sexual assault. The country includes physical coercion as well as verbal threats of violence under its definition of rape, which is wider than the definitions in other countries. This has resulted in a much larger reported rate than elsewhere. Additionally, the country has seen extensive social progress in recent years, but Sweden's history of inaction on issues related to sexual assault has left it with a higher rate than most other developed nations. This is particularly true for women between the ages of 15 and 44, who are four times more likely to be victims of sexual assault than men of the same age group.

The rape statistics in Switzerland are at 8.24 per 100,000 people, ranking the country sixty-fourth in terms of the highest rape statistics in the world. Despite this low rate of rape, the country has seen a worrisome uptick in sexual assault cases in recent years. Research indicated that the total number of reported rapes had increased by around 10% since 2017, highlighting the need for greater awareness and improved prevention measures. To address this issue, Swiss authorities have begun implementing initiatives such as victim support programs and educational outreach initiatives to make sure that everyone is aware of their rights and what resources are available to them if they ever fall victim to an act of sexual violence.

The rape statistics in the United States are at 38.20 per 100,000 people, ranking the country thirteen in terms of the highest rape statistics in the world. This high figure is likely due to several factors, such as a culture that perpetuates and normalizes sexual violence and assault, a lack of education around consent, and an overall attitude of victim-blaming when it comes to reporting rapes. Furthermore, many rapists go unpunished due to an inadequate justice system that often fails to bring perpetrators to justice or adequately support victims. This contributes to an environment where rapists can continue unchecked and can make victims feel unsafe in coming forward. In addition to existing cultural biases against prosecuting sexual violence cases, there is also the added societal pressure for survivors not to report the crime for fear of being judged or shamed by their peers. Overall, these factors contribute significantly to the high rate of rape in the United States.
