Introduction
The number of Muslims in the world has been increasing steadily over the years, and they are now the second-largest religious group, after Christians. According to the Pew Research Center, in 2015 there were 1.8 billion Muslims in the world, which is approximately 24% of the global population. This number is projected to increase to 2.2 billion by 2030, which will be approximately 26% of the world’s population.
The majority of the world’s Muslims live in Muslim countries, specifically in Asia and the Middle East, with Indonesia being the country with the largest Muslim population. However, the Muslim population is also growing in other regions, such as Europe and North America, due to immigration and conversion. The Pew Research Center projects that by 2050, Muslims will make up 10% of Europe’s population and 2.1% of North America’s population.
The Muslim population is however not homogeneous, as there are various ethnicities, cultures, and interpretations of Islam. The Sunni branch of Islam is the largest, accounting for approximately 85-90% of Muslims, while the Shia branch accounts for approximately 10-15%. There are also smaller sects within these branches, such as the Sufi and Ahmadiyya movements.
