Introduction
Depression is a global mental health disorder that can impact how people think, feel, and act, and that affects an estimated 350 million people worldwide. It can cause a variety of physical and emotional symptoms such as fatigue, sadness, difficulty concentrating, low self-esteem, loss of interest in activities they once enjoyed, feelings of helplessness or hopelessness, insomnia or sleeping too much, changes in appetite or weight loss/gain, aches and pains with no physical cause, anxiety or agitation, thoughts of death or suicide. It can also have a significant impact on relationships with friends and family members. In the United States alone it is estimated that over 17 million adults suffer from depression each year. People suffering from depression often find themselves feeling overwhelmed by their emotions and unable to function in daily life as they normally would.
Statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO) reveal that depression is the leading cause of disability in the world, with more than 264 million people suffering from moderate to severe depression. Research suggests that women are twice as likely to suffer from depression compared to men, and low-income countries tend to experience higher rates of depression than high-income countries. Additionally, WHO data shows that depressive disorders in adolescents have been increasing over the past decade, and over 800 000 people die due to suicide caused by depression each year. The economic costs associated with depression are also immense: it is estimated that depression and anxiety disorders cost the global economy around 1 trillion US dollars annually in lost productivity.

Most Depressed Country in the World
The most depressed country in the world is Greece, with a depression rate estimated at 6.52%. Greece has been suffering from a severe depression for the past few years, its economy having been in a downward spiral, poverty levels rising considerably, and unemployment rates reaching as high as 27%. People living in Greece are facing extreme hardship with rising costs of living while wages remain stagnant or decreasing further. In addition, Greece’s economic policies have led to a rise in public debt, making it one of the most indebted countries in Europe. All these factors contribute to an overall sense of despair and hopelessness among Greek citizens, leading them to suffer from psychological disorders such as anxiety, depression and other mental health problems at higher levels than anywhere else in Europe. The situation is particularly acute for young people who often struggle to find employment opportunities, resulting in even more feelings of despondency and helplessness. As if this wasn’t enough, Greece also suffers from an inadequate healthcare system that fails to provide adequate mental health services when needed. All these issues combined can help make sense of why Greece is currently considered the most depressed country in the world.

The depression rate in Finland is 5%, ranking the country twenty-fourth in the world. The causes behind this elevated rate are many and varied, ranging from genetic influences to environmental factors such as seasonal changes in daylight hours. Financial issues and social isolation have been identified as major contributing elements to depression development in Finland, particularly among elderly individuals. Additionally, it has been found that cultural attitudes can play a large role when it comes to mental health problems due to Finns being more likely to keep their thoughts or feelings to themselves rather than seeking help or expressing them openly.

The depression rate in France is 4.74%, ranking the country thirty-third in the world. Research suggests that this is due to a combination of factors, such as the country's rigid work culture, lack of job security, and income inequality. While French unemployment rates remain relatively low compared to other European countries, increases in permanent contracts have been accompanied by reductions in wages and working hours, leading to increasing financial insecurity for many French people. Additionally, the social stigma surrounding mental health issues can prevent individuals from seeking professional help or support from their communities, meaning the number of people affected by depression in France could be much higher than reported.

The depression rate in India is 3.69%, ranking the country one hundred and sixth in the world. Despite this relatively low rate, mental health issues remain largely unaddressed in India and there is still a lack of awareness. This is why research shows that many people with psychological disorders go untreated or are given inadequate care due to stigma, lack of knowledge, and lack of access to resources. Additionally, while some mental health facilities exist, they often do not have enough staff or adequate resources to provide quality care for those who need it.

The depression rate in Russia is 3.91%, ranking the country eighty-fifth in the world. This figure has remained relatively stable since records have been kept, indicating that Russia has not seen a drastic surge or drop in its depression rates over time. Nevertheless, it is important to note that 3.91% still represents hundreds of thousands of people who are affected by depression and may be in need of professional help and support resources. Mental health problems are on the rise globally, particularly among younger people, and so it is especially important for Russia to ensure that the country is doing all it can to provide support services and treatment options to those suffering from depression.
