Introduction
Autism, also referred to as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects around 168 million people around the world. It is characterized by communication difficulties, impaired social skills, and restricted and repetitive behaviors. People with autism experience difficulty understanding the perspectives of others and often struggle to connect with people on an emotional level. They may be hypersensitive to sensory input such as noise or light, and they may have difficulty expressing their feelings due to a lack of verbal communication or reduced nonverbal language. Common traits among those with autism include strong interests in a certain topic or activity, difficulties generalizing new information, obsessions with certain objects or topics, intense focus on details as opposed to the bigger picture, and an inability to make sense of abstract concepts. People with autism often require additional support throughout their lives to help them become more independent; these supports may include speech therapy, occupational therapy, psychological counseling, educational coaching, and specialized behavior support.

Autism Rates
The prevalence of autism varies significantly across different countries, though it is generally accepted to be higher in more developed countries. Globally, autism is believed to affect around 168 million children and adults, yet this number is likely much higher as many cases remain undiagnosed due to a lack of available resources and awareness. Furthermore, it is estimated that roughly one-third of all autistic people live in low and middle-income countries where access to diagnosis and treatment is limited or non-existent. Therefore, the true global prevalence rate remains largely unknown yet it can certainly be conceded that rates are rapidly rising across the world and more needs to be done in order to ensure that all those suffering from ASD receive proper care regardless of their geographic location or socioeconomic status.
The prevalence of autism has also changed over time, increasing significantly in the past few decades around the world. For instance, the prevalence of ASD in the United States has increased from 1 in 150 children in 2000 to 1 in 44 children in 2018. The reasons for this increase in autism rates are not entirely clear, but improvements in diagnosis, increased awareness, and changes in diagnostic criteria are thought to be contributing factors. There is ongoing research into the possible role of genetic, environmental, and other factors that may be associated with the increase in autism rates.
Highest Autism Rates by Country
The ten countries with the highest autism rates in the world are the United Kingdom, Sweden, Japan, the USA, the Netherlands, Ireland, Brunei, Canada, Singapore, and Andorra. At the top of the list is the United Kingdom, whose rate of 700.07 per 100k is one of the highest recorded in any country. Not far behind is Sweden, with a rate of 661.85 per 100k, followed by Japan at 604.72 per 100k. The United States of America also ranks highly with an autism rate of 603.38 per 100k, as does the Netherlands at 591.54 per 100k. Just behind this group are Ireland and Brunei, both coming in at 583.69 and 572.01 per 100k respectively. Canada follows close behind them with an autism rate of 565.85 per 100k, while Singapore and Andorra tie for tenth place with an autism rate of 547.02 per 100k.
The top 10 countries with the highest autism rates are:
1. United Kingdom – 700.07 per 100k
2. Sweden – 661.85 per 100k
3. Japan – 604.72 per 100k
4. United States of America – 603.38 per 100k

7. Brunei – 572.01 per 100k
8. Canada – 565.85 per 100k
9. Singapore – 561.99 per 100k
10. Andorra – 547.02 per 100k
Country with Highest Autism Rate
The United Kingdom is the country with the highest autism rate in the world, with a prevalence of 700.07 per 100k. The UK has made incredible progress in understanding and caring for those living with autism, but there is still much more work to be done. For instance, a recent report from the Autism Alliance UK suggested that only one-third of autistic adults receive any meaningful support or services from local authorities. Moreover, there is a lack of early intervention and access to specialist services for children on the spectrum. In terms of education provision, research suggests that over half of autistic children leave school without achieving five good GCSEs. These figures demonstrate the need for further investment into autism awareness and support both inside and outside the classroom environment.
Lowest Autism Rates by Country
The ten countries with the lowest rates of autism in the world are Taiwan, North Korea, Tunisia, Libya, Syria, Turkey, Morocco, Nothern Mariana Islands, India, and Thailand. Each of these nations has a global autism prevalence rate of 300 per 100k or less. Taiwan has the lowest rate of autism in the world with a rate of 199 per 100k. North Korea follows closely behind with an autism rate of 251.67 per 100k. Tunisia comes third, with a slightly higher autism rate, at 284.45 per 100k. Libya, Syria, Turkey, Morocco, Nothern Mariana Islands, India, and Thailand all have an autism rate of 285.55 per 100k or higher.
The top 10 countries with the lowest autism rates are:
1. Taiwan – 199 per 100k
2. North Korea – 251.61 per 100k
3. Tunisia – 284.45 per 100k
4. Libya – 285.55 per 100k
5. Syria – 286.45 per 100k
6. Turkey – 286.62 per 100k
7. Morocco – 287.53 per 100k
8. Northern Mariana Islands – 288.61 per 100k
9. India – 290.95 per 100k
10. Thailand – 291.65 per 100k
Country with Lowest Autism Rate
Taiwan is a world leader in terms of autism prevalence, as it boasts the lowest rate in the world, at a rate of 199 per 100k. The drastic difference between Taiwan’s rate and others can be attributed to the country’s strong commitment to early identification, diagnosis, and intervention for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In fact, since introducing legislation in 2015 that requires regular developmental screenings for all preschool children, Taiwan has seen a significant reduction in its prevalence rates. This initiative, among other evidence-based interventions, has helped pave the way for Taiwan to become one of the countries with the highest quality of life for people living with ASD as well as their families. Additionally, this success has served as an example for other nations around the globe who are striving to reduce their own autism prevalence levels and support their autistic citizens better.

The ARC provides a range of services, such as early intervention programs, therapy, and vocational training, to help individuals with autism develop their skills and achieve their potential. The number of people diagnosed with autism in Singapore has been increasing in recent years, which some researchers attribute to greater awareness and understanding of the condition.

Sweden has the second highest autism rate in the world, with an autism rate of 661.85 per 100k. This translates to a total population with autism of 67,658 and an autism rate among children of 788.26 per 100k, with a total of 13,985 children diagnosed with autism. The autism rate in Sweden has been increasing over the past few decades although some argue that the rise is due to better diagnosis and awareness rather than an actual increase in prevalence. It is worth noting that Sweden has been at the forefront of research into autism, and the country has implemented a number of policies to support individuals with autism and their families, including early interventions and access to special education.
